Can anyone tell me the correct procedure for selling a handgun privately? Specifically in North Carolina. I have heard different things, one if which says that I just need to receive a pistol permit from the buyer when we make the exchange. I just want to make sure that I am no longer liable for any misuse of the firearm..

Try this link as general information, but most private sales of firearms are regulated by your county. I suggest contacting your county office and asking them to be safe.

The buyer has to have a purchase permit or ccw. If it is a purchase permit, there isn't a requirement that you keep it, but you'll probably want to keep some record of the sale.

If he has a ccw, you can make a copy or just write down the esseentials.

The buyer doesn't have to be from your county but his permit or CCW must be from his county of residence.

True that the buyer doesn't have to be from your county, but the rules and laws of the sale itself are SPECIFIC to the county in which the TRANSACTION took place. So if he came to YOUR house to pay and pick up, YOUR county laws are in effect. If you go to HIS house to exchange money and the firearm, then HIS county laws apply. So you need to know what laws are in effect in the county where the transaction takes place.
