Bow and arrows?

How much should I expect to pay for a basic set up for target shooting? I've got a big yard in the woods and would like to take up archery without having to join a club and travel a lot. Also, where to buy? Any thoughts appreciated.

Depends on what kind of bow you want. There are some good websites for archery and also come club sites have links to archery equipment sites.

You can get a unbelievable amount of money tied up in a bow in a incredibly short amount of time. The last time I decided I needed a new bow I spent over a grand before I got out the door. Granted, a lot of that was on accessories and arrows but it's still an expensive sport. A good set of sights are roughly $100, granted there are cheaper and some are much more expensive but if you shop wisely you can find a good set for that about that amount. A decent release is $75 to $100 bucks. A dozen carbon arrows cut to your draw length is roughly $100. It adds up fast. I use mine primarily for hunting, some of the people that belong to clubs and shoot targets competitively have several thousand wrapped up in their bows. To get the most out of your experience the wisest thing to do is

A]decide what kind of bow you want to start out with whether it be the more traditional recurve/longbow type or the more modern compound bow.

B] do lots of research online and join a few forums, ask lots of questions.

C] Visit your local archery pro shop. Find out what brands they carry and ask more questions, they will be more than happy to help. If they aren't find another pro shop you are comfortable with and one you can communicate with. If you decide this sport is something you like you will be spending a lot of money there. Try to avoid the local box stores like Walmart or the large sporting goods stores like Dick's for your first purchase because your bow will need to be set up for you and rarely do you find anyone that can properly set up a new bow at these type of stores.

D] Do more research online of the brands of bows your local pro shop carries. All bows are not created equal even though they might be comparitively priced.

E] Go back to your local pro shop and shop. See if they have any used bows that might work for you. If not ask them if they would mind setting up a used bow if you can find one in the local paper, online etc. If they have a problem with it, which they probably won't, then find another shop that don't mind. Buying a used bow will save you lots and gobs of money, remember you haven't even shot your first arrow yet. You may get a bow and decide it isn't for you. Chances are someone in your area has bought a new bow and decided this very thing so shop around.

F] If you find a used bow then take it to your local pro shop and have it set up for you. Your bow will have to be adjusted for your draw length. After that adjustment is made then your bow is squared and all the other adjustments are made. If your bow isn't set up for you it will be very uncomfortable to shoot and you probably won't be able to hit the broadside of a barn. After the adjustments are made then have some arrows cut and field tips installed and your all set.

G] If you can't find a used bow or just want to buy a new one, again go to the local pro shop and buy it. They will have strings and parts for the bow they sell you. Let them set it up for you, get you some arrows and targets and your all set.

Hope this endless post helps.
Good Luck!!!

Scout pretty much covered it. As far as buying a bow, there are different brands just like everything else in life. Some guys are ford guys some are chevy. When it all comes down to it there really is no difference in how the bow works, just a different feel to specific ones. Find one that feels good, that you dont mind holding for a long time. Then have it custom adjusted. Be prepared to spend a lot of money upfront, but once that initial cost is out of the way it should go down from there.

Some stores offer packages that are pretty good. You can get a bow, sights, rest, quiver and a dozen arrows for a decent price.

Ive never really had a bad experiance with the Cabela's catalog.

desal is correct, however unless you have the tools and the know how to get it square and set it all up for you then it is truly a waste of good money in the long run.

Scout---Thanks for the advice. I know I prefer going to a local store whenever possible, but I never thought of set up issues. I think I'll see if theres anything used local. Thanks again.
