Recently bought a used Remington 870 Magnum 12 gauge shotgun. Watched the gunsmith I bought it from tear the whole thing down, clean it, and replace worn parts. Nice looking gun, shoots great, paid $175 for it. Did I get a good deal, or was I ripped off?

Edit: BTW, it is stamped with the 870 express logo, but the serial number on the receiver has an M after it, which I have been told represents a Magnum receiver on older 870's. Is this true?

Don't know the 870 well enough to comment on the M designator, but I will say that I would certainly buy a gunsmith refurbished 870 12ga. for $175 in a heartbeat. I'd call it a good deal (unless you live in some area where such guns go for far less than they do hereabouts, that is)

The 870 is a wonderful shotgun. Works like a charm, and inexpensive to boot. They sell for 300 and up new, so Id say yes, you got a good deal. They are great guns. Remington has been making them for close to 50 years IIRC, without many changes at all to the design, and it is still one of the most popular shotguns in the world--that fact alone speaks volumes to its reliability.

Around here, they go for $275 new, at Wal Mart. I'd love to be able to get one for only 175

I think you got ripped off big time. I'll tell you what....I'll give you $150 for that piece of junk just to take it off of your hands. You just let Uncle Block take care of everything.

Seriously though. You did well, especially with a "once over" by the local gunsmith. Good job.
