Cheaper alternative to NYPD issue glock

Hey guys...I'm going for the NYPD exam ina few months and I wanted to start practicing with a handgun. I've only owned a rifle before so I don't have any exp. with pistols...I know I need to get the permit and all that good stuff and take the classes.
What I'm looking for is a decent alternative that will give me a good idea about what to expect with a standard NYPD issued Glock. Thanks guys

My advice is to find a gun range that rents and just practice with a Glock.

I can't think of an alternative that isn't a) more expensive or b) has that goofy trigger safety.

But if you insist, maybe a Ruger 9mm DAO. You'll at least get some experience shoot double action, which I believe most cop guns are.

Goofy trigger=Springfield XD

Ok lemme clear things up im 19....so i need a good gun and how to buy it lol....

Most states that I've lived in won't let you buy a handgun until you are 21.

Like was said earlier, find a range what rents guns and spend some time (and money) there.

If you are nineteen, I personally don't know of any state where you can buy/own a handgun.

That's the main problem...I'll probably have to have my uncle buy it(FFL) and take me to the range with it. I was looking at some used S&W 9mm's online for around $250-300 is this a good deal?

You could buy a used glock-17 for 250-300, you could get one new for 400... I don't see why you don't just get one.

Don't let the Glock lovers talk you out of an XD

Why would you buy and imitation glock (XD), when you could get the real thing for the same price? I don't see the logic there. I've never talked with anyone who has fired both the Glock and the XD and prefers the XD. Also, if the NYPD uses the Glock, it would make more sense to do the same.

I personally thought the XD felt clunky compared to a Glock. My dad has a .40 cal glock and someone at the range had the springfield XD. I just didn't like the balance of it.

If you can spring for it get a new in the box Glock. If you decide that you want to buy it used, make sure you know what to look for. Field strip it and check out as many of the internals you can possibly get at without too much hassle. I had a friend buy a used 1911 and on the underside of the receiver, there was a nice crack that you wouldnt be able to see unless you took it down.

Also, here are some prices I found that seem to be reasonable:
Glock 17 NIB: $450 - $515
Glock 17 Used: $300 - $350
S&W SW9VE (Sigma) NIB: $350 -$415
S&W SW9VE (Sigma) Used: $300 - $375

Hope this helps!

You can get an XD for 400 NIB, try that with any Glock. Not to mention the added bonus of a grip safety, cocking indicator, and you get to miss out on all of those KaBooms.
