Springfield Mil Spec

So yesterday I stopped by the local sporting goods store and purchase a Springfield Armory Mil Spec .45acp. For those that aren't familiar with the gun it is a full sized 1911 about as plain as they come. It feels nice and the price was good. Today after class I'm heading to the range to try her out. I'll post a review after work.

Anyone have any experience with this pistol?

I have a Springfield compact 1911 with the 4 in. barrel. I've had it for about 5 years and never had any problems with it. Lately I've been eyeing up the TRP Operator. Good quality weapons. The Mil Spec would be a great starting point to build up your own custom 1911.

Went to the range the other day...

I was pleased with the trigger pull. I consistently put all 7 rounds(I know I need to get some 8 round mags) in 6in groups at 25 yards. I like the gun. I'll change the grips and rear sights first. BTW, I was using winchester Full Metal Jacket ammo. Any suggestions on grips/ rear sights?

8 round mags?
Do 8 round 1911 mags fit completely inside the grip or do they extend?

Yes they fit. They are made by Colt, Springfield, Kimber, Wilson Combat, and several aftermarket companies.

I see wilson makes ten round mags
what's the deal with those?
Do the ten round magazines fit inside a single stack grip?

No, they extend out the bottom. I've never used one b/c I think they look dorky. Para ordinance does make a variation on the 1911 theme that holds 10 within its frame. It is double stack though.

The Springfield 1911's are nice guns. I had an oppurtunity to buy one brand new (the lightweight one in two-tone finish) for $425 a few years back. I still kick myself for not jumping on it.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

How would the locals here compare para-ordnance's singe action single stack 1911 to the SA mil-spec?

Besides mostly cosmetic differences, is there any real change between the SA mil-spec and regular full size?

I ask because cosmetically I prefer the mil-spec, but the price difference between the mil-spec and full size is only 70 dollars.

Uh, I think (and may be wrong) Mil-Spec refers not to the size of the gun, but the "trim" model. The Mil-Spec that I just bought is full sized.

BTW, yesterday I picked up 2 eight round novak mags and some new black rubberized panel grips. I'm still looking for some wood panel grips. I'm going to talk to my gun smith friend later this week about switching my stock sights out. Cool stuff. I think I'll do the trigger after that.

I am refering to the differences between the Mil-spec full size and the loaded full size.

Oh man I'm jealous. I had an office mate who had a refurbished 1911. Nice gun and considered one of the best ever made.
