I must have been good because I got a 10/22 this year. I'm now looking for a good deal on a bull barrel and aftermarket stock. Anyone have any suggestions based on personal experience?

I'm also curious about the recoil buffers made for the 10/22. They look like plastic replacemebts for the bolt-stop pin. I'm a little concerned about a plastic pin breaking and letting the bolt fly through the back of the receiver.

Any advice would be appreciated.

In a word... No. Haha. THe 10/.22 is a great gun. Good and simple, pretty reliable, and a great gun for sunday plinking. My advice however, is dont go crazy on aftermarket stuff. Save you money for a bigger gun!

from what I have been told they are billed as increasing the life of the receiver, not increasing the general comfort of the shooter, cause if a .22lr makes you uncomfy....you've got some problems

Good stocks aren't cheap, but Houge makes pretty good ones... but don't count on using them for a sling or on them being SUPER accurate. http://www.getgrip.com/main/overview/overmolded.html (see the 10/22 section). Another (NOT cheap) alternative is http://www.mcmfamily.com/mfsinc_n/ruger.html

To be honest, the best upgrade you can get is a better trigger. If the trigger is a POS, then you can't squeeze the trigger right and your groups will be crap. However this is for more competitive shooting. For casual plinking, what you've got is fine. If you want more information, send me a PM, and I will help you out best I can!

Thanks for the links. It seems plenty accurate for the plinking I've done so far. Trigger seems smooth too. I'll go see what's being offered...

A friend of mine just got some a Fajen stock with the thumbhole in it... it rocks, makes the trigger feel a lot better too. He also got a Green Mountain Bull barrel. The other day he was keeping 20 shots in a nickel sized hole at about 100 feet. As for the bolt recoil buffer, i'm looking into it for mine.

first things first... get a volquartsen target hammer... You'll be glad you did :P They take take trigger down to ~2.5lbs just by dropping it in, and they're so much nicer than stock, you'll think you're shooting a different gun.

As for bolt buffers, weaponkraft makes probably the best ones... if it ever wears out, send it right back and he'll give you another :P Main purpose of these is if you use high-hyper velocity rounds (the bolt actually *hits* the stop pin) they'll stop the pin from warping/cracking the receiver.

Advice on barrels: for something inexpensive and very nice shooting, get a green mountain barrel... tapered or fluted is nice, and I hear they've created a few cool new styles too, including hexagonal...

If you want a light one, try the whistle pig aluminum sleeved/fluted/compensated bull barrel... they're really lightweight and pretty accurate to boot.

With any of this, keep in mind that accuracy (with a 10/22, at the very least) is the result of a full system of components... good trigger with fixed creep, a decent scope with adjustable objective, a decent barrel that's fitted correctly, possibly even headspaced, and a good ammo selection are all necessary if you want to really hit the mark. (winchester dynapoints rock in just about any 10/22 and can be purchased in bulk 500 pack for $10 at wal mart )

I'm still poking around looking for the best prices. Last weekend I took it out plinking and the takedown screw worked itself loose and the action/barrel became loose in the stock? Have you guys had this happen before? Should I put some loctite on it?

that happened to me my first time out with it. by the end of the day, the takedown screw was loose. it didnt do any harm, and when i put it back together after cleaning, i just snugged it up a little and and made sure it was tight. havent had a problem since. as for the weponkraft bolt buffers, i think theyre only like 5 bucks or so, 3 for $12 plus shipping with a lifetime warrantee methinks.
