Brownwood subdivision, Baytown, TX.
Subsidence, natural and accelerated by the pumping out of groundwater, combined with hurricanes, doomed this coastal neighborhood.

The good news is the area was turned into a highly regarded nature reserve.

 

Oil wells used to be a very common sight. I see a few around now, but most have removed and capped.













One my uncles built a house in the country in Oklahoma, but he didn't have (couldn't buy) the mineral rights. He now has or had an oil well very similar to the ones posted about 50 yards from his house. He did everything within his legal rights to hinder the installation, but eventually lost the fight. I don't have any photos of it.

Westbury Square Apartments, Houston, TX

Sections of Westbury are still nice, but some experienced major urban decay. The usual story: Prices of modest houses fell, rentals became common, urban flight lead to even lower prices, lead to more rentals, ageing houses need expensive repairs, etc. The cycle continues.
