According to sources, it opened in 1970 and only lasted about 10 years. It was a big hit when it first debuted, but I imagine there probably wasn't much else going on around that area (North Carolina) anyway. Given how state-of-the-art most theme parks are now, it really does look like something you'd spend not more than 30 minutes there and hurry to get out of.

However, you are correct- it's not entirely abandoned; it opens periodically for special tours.
