Coronavirus Update (Live): COVID-19 Wuhan China Virus Outbreak - Worldometer

This is a good summary to start a thread on this global issue.
It is as real-time as I've seen
Check it periodically, it updates often.

And has factual records of most things globally, since the beginning
Records go back in time as you scroll down

It's got charts, definitions, descriptions, etc...
Seems to all be medically and scientifically accurate.

It’s been going on since the beginning of the year.

This has been a great concern to me since then
And as some of you may know from my posts on FB I’ve been bringing attention to it.
(whether some wanted to be aware or not)

There’s going to be great international impact
Suffering and unfortunately really bad reactions.
Including by the governments affected and who aren’t prepared...

I have no agenda other than info and the safety of others.
Although I will make mention of the bad acting of ANY government
(warning - with sarcasm included...deal with it)

Also I have NO bias at all towards ANY people, country or culture.
Any opinion is to the safety of others.
We expect everyone posting to respect this.

There’s going to be some politics, but this is only a symptom of the overall epidemic...
and you’re welcome to express your opinion
    * However this wasn’t put in politics because it it affects everything and everyone
    So it a general discussion

This is happening fast, so there may be lots of posts about anything...keep up, this may change the world.

I hope we all get through this healthy in the end.
And with as little impact to our lives
This is one of those “interesting” times in history.
As in the ancient curse, “May you live in interesting times”
Because those were the ones hell to live through.
Let’s hope we can keep the hell down.
I wish the best for our world.

    Let’s keep the panic down
And for goodness sake, wash your hands.

FYI, I have connections with the government and medical community...all my own sources are real, factual and emphasis on good science.
I will note any opinion and attempt to minimize any fake news...real fake or tabloid, not politics “fake”

My background is in IT, including Cybersecurity
But I also have knowledge and literal experience in physics, genetics, medicine, chemistry and the underworkings of the US Federal government.
(from my past work with them...DOD, Treasury, DHS, FEMA, etc and includes secured areas including the White House/OMB....all info is public and not secret or even confidential)

So I’m not speaking out my ass (...although no promises of not making an ass of myself )

This includes some knowledge of real repression.
It won’t be “conspiracy theory” but the potential of or real circumstance of true corruption during this crisis.

    Where ever I roam
I want to know about the people that have recovered from it. How long did it take? Do they have antibodies and can't get re-infected?

It doesn't seem to be spreading nearly as fast outside of Wuhan, and I'm wondering if previous colds that people have had might help them be immune.

China seems to be handling it somewhat well. It is good that they locked down cities and such, but they should have stopped all travel out, and only allowed medical personnel with proper bio hazard suits in.

I have no confidence that the US would be able to do that, nor would a lot of citizens comply with it, even if there was a 2%-3% chance of death. The other hard part is when do we need to start protecting ourselves and stop public gatherings in this country? And even people who are sick will still go to work at restaurants, grocery stores, and fast food places.

This tracking map shows that new cases in China are slowing down, and it is outside of China were things could get bad, but haven't really exploded in numbers like a true airborne virus would.

    Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS

Emergency Preparedness and Response | CDC

The media isn't helping things, and even the CDC isn't doing enough to prepare people if they are going to bring on a 21-28 day "house arrest" type of quarantine for everyone. I think they would rather let 300 million people get sick and have 7-8 million dead than try what the Chinese have done however.

All I know is those masks only help to keep other people from getting sick if you are already sick. Maybe if they wore safety goggles it would be a little better.

The stock market crash is a little excessive though, but at least it happened now and not after Bernie Sanders's election.

And it isn't much of a "conspiracy theory" to suggest that this escaped from the only biohazard level 4 facility in China that just so happened to be in Wuhan.

Nothing can be done, its a very bad flu, but outside of baring all travel, and even shutting down areas of the country, it can't be contained.

Its incubation period is long enough with no symptoms that infection can spread prior to symptoms.

The best scenario is slowing it down in terms of not overwhelming medical facilities, which also might mean more spreading since it won't "burn out" as quick either.

I'm not overly concerned at this point despite working in the medical field and seeing dozens of people daily. Its bad but its not 1918 again either.

I was talking to some people today about buying and I'll be putting in a small sum I have available probably Monday. With the press playing this one up for political purposes I might as well cash in. I got screwed in 2016 by assuming Hilary would win and buying a shit ton of gun manufacturer stock. Ooopsy!

I'm also not in the least bit worried about a stock market crash over President Sanders but thats why I stay off the politics forum here.

We Don’t Really Know How Many People Have Coronavirus

I've been saying this for some time...

Don't expect the government, officials, scientists or media to give all information, correct or otherwise.
Some they don't know yet...it's all too fast and chaotic
Some is by neglect or ignorance
    Some is by intent...
There may be quite a few governments (or groups or even individuals) who opt to repress or not report (for MANY reasons)

For example, to minimize the panic, stabilize money markets, keep control
Or perhaps for political or selfish reasons...
Like worry about the US elections. (and that's just one country)

And scientists & doctors are human too...fallible.

We won't likely know the real deal and numbers...until afterwards.

The masks are sold out in my semi large city someone posted on Reddit. I have a real full face respirator so I'm not too concerned, but I might be stocking up on some supplies today.

I've still got quite a few from my ex and her illness...and paint projects
It's gloves that may be more important.

Me, I'm just using my elbows and coat tails.
And grabbing carts in the front not by the handles
    But I do this anyway
It helps...especially in the big city

Trump seeks to quell fear as first U.S. coronavirus death is reported

It's not the deaths themselves...it's the panic they causes.
There's going to be tons more illnesses with just breathing issues that's the real impact.
Not to dismiss the dead at all, it's just that are larger factors.

And the cascading affects from this...
Markets, food, resources, people acting out or being weird.
    Mob mentalities.

I'd say look at Italy for your closest model how the US will react and behave, IMHO.
(large, chaotic, dynamic, corrupt govt, egotistical leaders, random resources, religious, strong willed people who expect freedom and do what they want, porous borders and an unwillingness to not lock down tight including military use)

How does the coronavirus compare with the flu? — The New York Times

BTW, all the information and tests on this Coronavirus is NEW

    There’s a lot they don’t know...are speculating on
    And it changes often
Medical personnel don’t know how to treat it or recognize it good.

    Whereas, Influenza...is well known
    And they have practice on
And there’s multiple antivax...and standard protocols known by med staff.

Also, it’s not just fast, the incubation period idling

That’s why it’s best to err on the side of caution
    Including exported foods (especially raw).
    Yes, it’s potentially that Virulent.

Hopefully, it doesn’t mutate or embed itself into walls and non-organic materials.

    This is an aggressive one...

Public, not just the US but the public at large isn't very knowledgeable of biology. Like, at all.

The media, especially todays 24/7 media needs engagement beyond any other motivation, as its hard to get adds for the same news 24/7.

I'll take you back to a much simpler time...and I think people only think that sort of thing because those problems are worked out, at least kinda. I'm sure the problems of 201 AD were complex as hell.

Anyways 2011, per Sept 11. Things were boring. The dot com bubble busting doesn't bring watchers and this is PRE everyone being online, and they still were struggling.

So we had "shark attack summer". That summer it was always "shark attack here and there". I'm sure if you polled people 35% would have said "we gotta do something about sharks, including people living in Nebraska.

Then 9/11 happens and sharks weren't interesting anymore.

Oddly there were less shark attacks that year than the previous year.

But people will panic and then people will horde its what we do, I'm sure its innately survival, better to panic than not panic just in case and better to horde than be unprepared.

And outside of marshal law (aka China) what can we really do? And TBH I have no idea if it even helped in China or was just their way of saying "we are doing something" in typical oppressive fashion only a authoritarian state can provide.

    @Herculite - I agree with ya fully.

I guess I’m passionate about this one
As opposed to the others, I saw this coming
    Something different about it
    Growing way too fast.
It’s the equivalent of a tsunami

The others were ponderous and isolated
    Gave us time to react
This time it’s a perfect storm (including idiots in charge)

I guess I’m trying to yell to others to get back from the beach quick...find shelter on high ground

That’s all ya can do when the dog decides to scratch the fleas.
Some fleas get away, some get scratched off.

And you’re right, the media has turned basically into British tabloids, 24/7

But it’s what we got...for now
Certainly not going to get better with the web (pun intended)

I’ve got my floaties on...yelling at others to get the fuck out of the water from the penthouse balcony.

Even if we likely survive, the damage will likely be significant and may change things.
    C’est la vie...

Italy Shows Just How Crazy Coronavirus Panic Can Get

Remember what I said about Italy being a close model for the US near future...:eek:
And it's just starting there...China went thru 2 months and LOCKED it down to get there.
    Nuff said

    Oh yeah, don't panic

    New York City
    supposedly it landed in NYC

The first case of coronavirus in New York City was confirmed on Sunday to be a woman in her late 30s who recently traveled to Iran, a state official said.

Governor Cuomo released a statement on Sunday night announcing the first case in the state. A source told The Post that the woman lives in Manhattan.

“The patient, a woman in her late thirties, contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran, and is currently isolated in her home,” Cuomo said in the statement.

Despite the state’s first case of the deadly virus, Cuomo insisted, “There is no cause for surprise — this was expected.”

“As I said from the beginning, it was a matter of when, not if there would be a positive case of novel coronavirus in New York.”

As of late Sunday, there were 76 confirmed cases of coronavirus, known as COVID-19, across the US.

But what is there *really* to do?

Lets say the government "confiscated" airway time to explain everything exactly as we know it, and its basically "Its a really bad flu, elderly and immunocopromised people are in danger and if they have symptoms should get a medical evaluation if they have any symptoms. People should stay out of large gatherings, and should stay home if they have any symptoms such as a fever.

I think thats pretty fine advice right now.

People would fucking go nuts because the government was covering something up!

(Even if they didn't have to demand time and all the news agencies were to go along with it)

Basically the best solution would be to get the press to stop covering it like they are, but in a way that no one really noticed they weren't covering it, which I don't think is possible.

We could shut down cities and such aka China, which is basically going into full panic mode from the start.

I really can't think of anything to do at this point but ride it out, even if I became president, or head of the CDC or anyone in authority. It would be basically only not panicking, putting things in perspectives, and realizing people will do what people do.

I tried to explain to a staff member of mine that closing a school (this happened locally like 2 weeks ago) because someone came to school, asymptomatic, but someone in their house had just traveled and was sick may have overkill, but she felt 2 days of closed school wasn't enough. And that was two weeks ago. Mind you no one tested positive for anything, they were just sick at home (and it wasn't a case).

A couple of weeks ago Trump wanted a travel ban to China, he was called racist by the senate minority leader (I think, I can't recall if it was house or senate but I think senate, and its not worth check tbh). Which does show the "idiots in charge" but in the long run I don't think having a travel ban or not is going to stop it. To many ways for it to get into the country unless someone wants to close all the borders.

Very old meme from a video game about making a virus to destroy the world, (forget which one there are a few) and pretty much on point.

I'll respectfully disagree with you to that context and extent.
Doing nothing is a bad approach too...there's a balance. (as my link in the Trump thread shows...tried it in 1918, doesn't work)

It's not even the health aspect that will be the only impact
    This will be the aftershock

  19. rogue49

    I don't either.
Isn't that what we pay experts and leaders to do???

I think maybe when it blows up in regions, cancel schools and large gatherings. (why flame the fire)
Support the hospitals and urgent cares..doctors like crazy.
As well as police and military who'll be vulnerable to it and trying to prevent stupidity.

Encourage and orient restaurant workers BEFORE it gets there (they'll be both vulnerable and potential super spreaders)
We're going to have to setup a fund for restaurants and impacted business and encourage forgiveness or delay of debt.

Think of the start of the Great Recession...
And that's not even if it's a catalyst into an actual one.

We'll see an increase of the national debt, to say the least.

    And that's just the start...

You'll also likely see the House become WAY more activist and even powerful
They're the keeper of the keys to the purse. (giving cash, making laws, getting leverage)

It's going to get weird, if we see it increasing as we are already...

I don't think its going to be all that bad. Leaders are people, I have a very high IQ, I have a good deal of world knowledge, and I have no clue.

The only plan right now would be getting supplies where needed and putting on a happy face.

I'm buying stock though, I didn't have any money in 2008.
