So Ohio's rifle season starts next week. Got me thinking. How many deer hunters or hunters in general do we have on TFP? I have been bow hunting the last few weeks just about every other day. And next week I will be taking my trusty muzzleloader into the woods. Looking for those moose size antlers.

I might take some pictures of some of my hunting gear. Post some of yours!

In IL we are restricted to shotguns instead of rifles, but I started hunting a couple of years ago. This year I added bow hunting to the mix. I hunted 2 days this past weekend, but didn't take anything. I saw a couple of does (now I wish I'd have shot one of them) and a 4pt buck that I let go. He sat under my tree for a good 20-30 seconds checking me out before he casually made his way down the ravine behind my stand.

I'll probably go again for second shotgun season during the first weekend in Dec.

Borla in IL you can also use muzzleloaders. I have never been a fan of shotguns for deer hunting. But everyone has there like and dislikes.

Yes, there is a muzzle loader season, though I've never tried it. With a rifled barrel and the appropriate slugs, my gun is pretty accurate out past 150 yards. On the land I hunt, it is so heavily wooded that it's unlikely to ever need anything beyond that anyway.

We used to be shotgun only in this part of upstate NY.
Then they opened it to rifles.
I thought I liked hunting with a shotgun.
Then I went rifle (.243 Win) ans I am never going back.
Better accuracy, less recoil yada yada yada.
And I shot a beautiful buck about 2 hours into the season on Saturday . So it's a good season already.

.243 is a great deer gun. Well its a great all around gun. I have always wanted a Ruger No.1 243 win.

  9. I did modern rifle this year, wasn't planning on hunting but I got my first one in probably 1o-13 years of off and on, half-assed hunting, mostly glassing for other people and hiking all over hell and back. I suppose different states have different seasons, I got mine in mid-October. Things worked out, and I got a nice 4x5 mule deer. The meat is amazing, not gamey at all. I might give muzzleloading a try next year. I got my wall-hanger this year, next year I'll put in for a doe tag/buck and secondary hunt. I'm most definitely hooked again.

If any of you happen to find yourself with too much venison this year, I would LOVE to take it off your hands. Preferably in the form of peppered jerky, but cubes or ground are awesome, too.

I am not confident enough in my ability to make a fast kill to go hunting myself (yet), but my source for the last couple years may not pull through this year. :(

If I get something I'll keep you in mind. I could probably ship a small cooler fairly inexpensively.

This is from my very first time deer hunting. He was following some does and walked right behind my stand less than an hour into opening morning. All my buddies told me I should've quit right then, it's been all downhill ever since. :p

This season has produced the 2 best deer that my hunting buddy and I have ever taken.
I got mine at about 0800 on opening day and he got his around 0715 the following morning. His looks like Borla's above.
Makes deer season so much more fun. Today it was 34F and pouring rain all morning. What did I do? Slept in and futzed around inside of course. If we had no deer yet I would have been out there being miserable.

Ponypotato if we have extra I will send it your way. We usually do not have jerky made though. And we cut up the deer ourself so its mostly Steaks / roasts / ground. Sometimes we have trail made and couple times we have had deer hotdogs made.
