Gadhafi regime crumbling...and fast

The first test for the National Transitional Council, and then ultimately, a new democratic government, will be to demonstrate respect for the rule of law. Easier said than done when never having experienced it, but looking at the top leadership of the NTC, one can see more respect for human rights than their predecessor (albeit that wouldnt take much) and reason to be cautiously optimistic.

Unless of course, one has a predisposition to see terrorists or Islamic extremists behind the popular movements in every recent uprising that has occurred.

New Libyan regime declares Sharia Law to be the basis of their new government. Just like I said earlier, greedy dictator out, Islamic Extremists in. Wonderful, this Arab Spring thing.

"The transitional government leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil set out a vision for the post-Gadhafi future with an Islamist tint, saying that Islamic Sharia law would be the "basic source" of legislation in the country and that existing laws that contradict the teachings of Islam would be nullified."

Believe it or not, Eddie, but even moderate Muslims follow Sharia Law. It's an integral part of the Qur'an.

That they made it the official basis for their legal system is no surprise there.

1. Libya's a mainly Muslim country, and
2. all Muslim countries (except Turkey) either have Sharia Law, or an individual State Law that does not contradict the principles of Sharia Law.

Your statement that Sharia Law makes them Islamic extremists only goes to show how deep ignorance runs within you.

 

So much for the "wave of democracy" sweeping the Arab countries. Instead, these muslims continue to suppress the people under religious law.

Even beyond that, the Libyan draft constitution is very similar to the new Iraq constitution that the US helped draft that puts Sharia right at the top:

Article 2:​

First. Islam is the official religion of the State and it is a fundamental source of legislation:​

A. No law that contradicts the established provisions of Islam may be established​

B. No law that contradicts the principles of democracy may be established.​

C. No law that contradicts the rights and basic freedoms stipulated in this constitution may be established.​

Second: This Constitution guarantees the Islamic identity of the majority of the Iraqi people and guarantees the full religious rights of all individuals to freedom of religious belief and practice such as Christians, Yazedis, and Mandi Sabeans.​

Of course, US conservatives never had such an alarmist reaction about Islamic extremism in the constitution their boys helped write.

In the draft Libyan constitution, similar language is Article I.......makes it much more extremist.

Article 1: ​

Islam is the Religion of the State, and the principal source of legislation is Islamic Jurisprudence (Sharia)..... The State shall guarantee for non-Muslims the freedom of practicing religious rights ...​

 

Morocco needs our tourist dollars and we need their sweet surf spots. Besides, Morocco has always been a very European place more than it's been a muslim place.

 

The new Moroccan constitution that was adopted several months ago kept much of the core language of the previous constitution:

PREAMBLE​

An Islamic and fully sovereign state whose official language is Arabic...​

Article 6: Islam shall be the state religion. The state shall guarantee freedom of worship for all.​

More European than Muslim?

 

If you've ever been to Morocco, as I have several times, you would see first hand what I'm talking about. Reading about a country in wikipedia isn't the same as spending time there.

 

Because Ghadafi was more interested in making money and living the high life rather than spreading Islam throughout the world with jihad. And really, that's all this Arab Spring thing is...a massive jihad push.

 

Of course, that is why we should judge these populist uprisings on the quality of the surfing rather than the resulting constitutions providing greater democratization, with more guaranteed rights for the people.

 

More guaranteed rights under Sharia law? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day.
