A good hundred or two years of british rule followed by the influx of radical islam will tend to do that for a country.

Ummm, wrong country, man. You're thinking of Pakistan. He's talking about India. The majority religion there is definitely NOT Islam.

It's true that there are both religions there but they are both repressive when it comes to the female gender. I don't think fundamentalist Islam has that much to do with it.

Hey, there is 80% hinduism and 14% islam over here. Islam represses women not hinduism. Before any victorian or muslim rule over here india was a very good and liberal country in the world, but these rulers destroyed us and our mentality.

You live there and I respect that but it is not my impression that Hinduism is progressive when it comes to women. I'm not saying other religions are better. After all, Christianity tends to be repressive, as well.

Before British rule there wasn't much of a nudity taboo in India. After their withdrawal Islam became the most vocal force of repression in the region.

Well, if you're referring just to nudity that may or may not be true. I'm not informed enough to know. But I will make two observations:
    1) 'nudity,' particularly communally/culturally acceptable nudity is not the same as pornography and does not necessarily include young male familiarity with the graphic details of a vagina
    2) tolerance toward female nudity does not imply a lack of social repression when it comes to females (which was more the way I was heading)

India's worst problems regarding rape escalated from the '90s to today. I think it has more to do with the wider culture than it does with any particular religion. Another problem has been a lack of government progress regarding the legalities surrounding sexuality. Add to that how women are objectified in Bollywood, advertising, and Hindu practices (e.g., weddings). Add to that a broad male sexual entitlement that has been established for years and only made worse. What you have is a disaster in the making.

Domestic violence is also a major problem. This also can be attributed more to male entitlement than anything.

India is probably one of the worst countries in the world for women right now, and it won't do any good to blame colonial Britain and the Muslim minority. The solutions lie elsewhere.

and india is not the rape capital of the world. USA comes first, then South Africa and then india.

The stats are slippery for a number of reasons, a a couple being 1) the variance in how rape is defined legally, and 2) the fact that in many places it's estimated that over half of rapes aren't even reported.

But maybe leave America out of this. It takes a lot of flak already in many other threads. (Just have a look at the politics forum.)

You're ignorant of Indian history. I suggest that you read up before trying to pretend that you do. The population of Muslims in India as declined radically in the last 100 years, which includes the British occupation and independence.

The number of suspected but unreported rapes throws that study off quite a bit, especially since they're not accounted for at all in the study. The stigma attached to rape victims in India makes for a much lower reporting frequency.
