Cities put their names on manhole covers in hopes of discouraging theft for scrap metal. Sometimes the great designs encourage theft. At one time Galveston had a problem them being taken as souvenirs.

 

I was responding to this, should have quoted

Manhole covers are very heavy and would be awkward to carry, but is making them really attractive a good idea?
