    There isn't a singular reason.

    Some are medically crazy. They have a chemical imbalance that isn't being treated properly and they aren't completely in control of themselves.

    Some have been enabled. People close to them (parents, siblings, mates, close friends, whoever) have allowed them to act like that without facing realistic consequences for it, or have actually fed into the behavior. So the person has warped their actions and values over time because it's been allowed.

    Some people are evil and just like preying on others.

    Some are immature and, if combined with a touch of any of the above, they see how far they can push it. Sometimes without even realizing it.

    Some are all of the above.

    I think people act like that because they can - because other people let them. If it didn't work for them, they'd need to adjust their strategy. They also adjust their strategy according to their surroundings (so maybe don't do this (much) at work, for example) and can even be quite charming if they HAVE to be. Many will eventually adjust and learn that this behaviour is not acceptable.

    Of course, there are people who will never adjust - NPD comes to mind - but they adjust by finding new victims when their old victimes learn to walk away.

    For as long as there are people who will accept that it is their role to mollify them, people who behave like this can act like petulant two-year-olds for ever.

    There is an added bonus to doing so. Nothing is EVER your fault. Your behaviour (along with any bad outcome) is the fault of the people around you - and they must pay the consequences.

    I do wish he hadn't lied about his and his girlfriend's age. I feel as if I've been duped. I had assumed that they were adolescents to begin with and gave him advice based on that. I altered the advice once I thought he was older and...
