My wife & I were in San Antonio the last few days. I finally actually went to the Briscoe Museum of Western Art, & it was great.

The Univ of Houston Cougars men's basketball team no longer has to worry about playing for the NCAA Championship here in Houston.

They got their ass kicked & stomped by the Miami Hurricanes. A great regular season and a couple of wins in the tournament is nice, but a 14 point loss is getting your ass kicked.

Oh, Alabama, another top seed, also lost. But only by seven points.

Something in the movie Mr. Holland's Opus has bothered me for many years:

His teenaged (exact age?) son was born deaf (I think), yet Mr. Holland couldn't sign worth a shit.

Some people are like that, even parents.
It’s like they’re digging their heels in.

My ex-gf long ago, who was deaf, had the same problem with her family.
They could barely do a lick of sign.
They expected her to learn to read lips.
And stuck her in normal school with no deaf communication or culture at all.
The family had made their own strange hand movements while speaking loudly to her, like they were talking to a dog.

Often done through ignorance, perhaps a culture thing.
Or through resentment or a backlash of responsibility of the deafness.
Who knows. I know I don’t understand why.

Problem is, if the child isn’t taught how to communicate properly, they don’t understand more complicated conversations. They end up speaking like Tarzan, even to fully fluent signing people including other deaf folks.

People’s brains become less malleable when they’re teens, so they’ll never learn as well to communicate.
A professor, a deaf expert, told me this when I was living with her.

And it was one of the reasons we broke up, we could not communicate fully. (If you haven’t noticed, I’m a talking type person). I tried, I learned sign fully, I lived with her and loved her, but she couldn’t explain what she was thinking nor could I explain necessary adult ideas back. (Then again I was in my early 20’s, probably not mentally prepared). One of my biggest regrets.

My ex-gf to this day, decades later, still both signs and writes very basic, words stunted like Tarzan (no joke or bias, I do care a lot…it just is)

The deaf character in the movie is lucky to have the mother fully engaged and fluent and got him involved with signing and deaf culture and learning.
So despite Mr Opus’s attitude, the kid came out fully capable.

It would have been been a much different story.
A sad one with no happy ending.

Well, that triggered some old wounds for me…

It's a serious issue with kids born into hearing families.
Only about 40% learn to sign with proficiency.
That leaves kids, as Rogue pointed out, without language development when they need it most.
We also see the parents who refuse to let their kids join the Deaf community because they think it means they won't be successful in the 'real' world.
Personally I think they are more afraid of their kids being involved in something they will be totally not be able to participate in.
Parents are happy to take their kids to sports in the wee hours of the morning but won't let them hang out with deaf friends.
    It's fucked up.

I had no ideas deafness was still an issue with some families. In my mind it's simple, you have a deaf child you learn to sign.

This thought was triggered a rerun episode of Providence* in which a deaf mother selfishly doesn't want her deaf young daughter to have a cochlear implant, but the hearing father does.

    * If you haven't seen Providence, think sappy "Hallmark" Christmas movie that doesn't end.

The cochlear implant issue is way more complicated than you might think.
We get people into DVR who had them installed as kids by well meaning parents and they took them out because the sound was painful and overwhelming.
They have to be constantly maintained and balanced which is something kids, teenagers don't do well.
The Deaf Community also doesn't consider themselves broken.
Having something forced on them to make them hear, especially when it involves major surgery, does not go over well.
I'm not big D Deaf and not part of the community so my making their arguments will sound wrong and probably a bit weird.
But it makes sense to them.

I received (yet another) life insurance offer through the mail.

    They included a small freebie:
    A few sheets of
    return address labels for envelopes.

    Seriously, AAA?

Late last night our AC, the part in the attic (blower unit I've since learned), made a long & loud humming noise, then stopped. The outside compressor kept running constantly..

We got it looked at this afternoon. The replacement fournace & blower unit is in stock, & repairs should start around 10 tomorrow morning.

It's 86F in our house, & we still have about 4 hours of western sun to go.

Oh man, I remember when the AC went out at our house in NJ.
That was a miserable couple of days.
I'm glad they are getting to you soon.
