Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

    kramus what I might see

The beauty of a large colloborative interlocked set of ideas is the wide open possibilities they have. Imagine if you will how cool it would be to have someone properly handle Heinlein's Future History. There are a dozen or more epics begging to be made. Note I don't feel Starship Troopers was anything much at all. But if Job or The Number of the Beast or Time Enough For Love were done well . . . Another exciting possibility I would like to see handled is Niven's Known Space. That is a beautifully realized, richly articulated series of stories. I've avoided reading any of the Star Wars stuff I know is out there but people reportedly enjoy them. Maybe they range as widely as Heinlein's or Niven's work does. Which means we are in for a real treat. Here's hoping.
A meaningless aside. Lucas has a smokin' lady. Brilliant, successful, beautiful, and with a full life independent of Lucas. He still has plenty going for him if he can interest & keep a woman as fine as Mellody Hobson.

On further reflection, I'm glad it was Disney that bought out Lucasfilm and not some other mega-corporation- the alternatives would be too ghastly to contemplate, I think...

I just read that the new film will not be directly connected to any of the films, books, graphic novels, etc. It will be something new.

    I remain cautiously optimistic.

Dude, and I believe she deserves to be more of a Disney princess than half of those so-called "princesses."

Can I see Stranger in a Strange Land as a soft-core porno? That is where I stopped reading.

Or it could buy a whole lot of schoolbooks, which is apparently what's going to happen. Like I said, that's pretty cool.

I did see your post here mentioning that and read it elsewhere as well about the foundation most of the money is going to.
Much better use of the money than building some kind of massive physical monument for yourself, buying hundreds of rare and exotic cars, building your own fully functioning death star that looks incomplete, etc.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it will. His biggest failure to date was probably the show "Dollhouse," and that was not a big-budget loss. It's pretty easily balanced out by "Avengers," "Cabin in the Woods," "Buffy" and "Angel." Hell, even "Firefly" and "Serenity" ended up making money on DVD and iTunes.

You might not appreciate him, but that doesn't mean he's not a genius: the man's got a huge, deeply committed fan base....

So worried about this. The problem is, the entire star wars universe has already been created... be it in the movies, books, E books, comics and video games. Disney would not have a lot of wiggle room, here. I don't know... They do have the "Avengers" thing going for them. Yaaaa.

This looks like it's going in the right direction so far (and so soon!)...

And before any of you say, "Well, pfft...does he know space opera?"...let me say this: At least the dude can write, and he clearly has range.

His first screenplay, Little Miss Sunshine, won an Oscar.

I guess his first test in the right direction (i.e., similar genre) will be how the writing is in the next Hunger Games.

OK, I just heard that the mouse has locked in the writers for the at least two of the new Star Wars trilogy. Kasden and Kinbreg. Now I know next to nothing about Kinberg, But I think we all know who Lawrence Kasden is. And for those who don't. This is the guy who wrote 'The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" two of the best of ALL the Star Wars series IMHO. This guy has always been one of my fav writers. He wrote films like Silverado, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Big Chill, and so many others. I think he is a perfect choice to write the next chapters in the Star Wars saga.

Yeah it is, but think about this writer team-up..Joss Whedon (creator of Firefly and Avengers writer) and Lawrence Kasden. Now that would be interesting to see what they could come up with for Star Wars.

    But seriously....

If this can't save it then maybe the IP isn't worth saving.

I mean, it's not like it's Star Trek.

They tried to officially kill the Star Trek films with that last one, hopefully they can redeem themselves somewhat with the next one. Hopefully Q makes an appearance and takes the viewer out of this parallel timeline for good (I can dream).
Really is hard to go any lower after the last three prequels. You could bring Dora the Explorer wielding a pink light sabre into the story through some poor plot device and still make a better end product.

No they didn't. They gave it new life. Full impulse, as it were. Warp factor 9.

I find that films like this spend a lot of time setting things up like characters and plot, etc. (And in this case, it was well done.) The next film will likely be all awesomeness now that the introductions are out of the way.

Is that the only thing ruining it for you?

As long as they don't John Carter the thing, it will be fine.

I could handle this parralel timeline just fine as an extended television episode or series arc. It would be fantastic in the usually well written books ( I have more than a few of them). It was a horrible idea for the main branch of the film to take.
What ruined it for me was the "Mission Impossible/poorly done action film" look and feel. Yes some of the earlier films could have used a degree of that but this (paraphrasing myself from my own blog) was just another generic sci-fi action flick with snazzy effects that I found barely watchable. Karl Urban was superb literally channeling Deforest Kelley and seeing Leonard Nimoy was great but overall it was just painful. Seeing Ambassador Spock stuck in such an odd situation does make interesting possibilities though.
If they must stick with this universe I sincerely hope they throw some serious twists in there; the kind of thing that is so far out of left field that it would never work for several reasons in the proper timeline.
And then they can pull a Newhart and have Spock wake up and realise it was all a bad dream, but so sorry the Romulan Homeworld is still long gone.

All I will say is give it a chance. As with properties like this one, it's all about telling new stories. I can see why some would object to essentially re-writing characters, but I think it's worth waiting to see where they take it.
