Right now my group is trying to figure out how to stop a Shadow Hulk. (DnD ver 4, badass beastie...that gaze attack is nasty)
Without getting anyone killed...and it getting to its goal.

Fortunately, it just came onto the scene in the midst of a massive siege...but we didn't have more time to play that night (stay tuned...)
But it is taking us all chatting together to figure out what we can do.
    What resources?
    What powers?
    What items or skills?

I think we've figured out something, otherwise we would have gotten slammed
...and someone miserable losing a char they've worked on for a LONG time.
We've got some oil and tar, we were dumping on the entryway opponents. (not much dmg, but every bit helps)
Well, we were thinking we can run up, someone throw the oil on the eyes, then the gaze attack would be nulled. (gaze makes allies hit allies)
Even a sleep spell beforehand would help the hit, making it prone, and unable to attack with it when it saves vs. the spell.
Anything so we aren't pounding each other before we TRY to whittle down its HP. (800+)

But this is what I like about this...
Strategy & tactics...but with a WTF twist. (with fantasy & magic you NEVER know what's going to hit you...or where)
In "reality based" RPG, it's the SOS...basically, shoot a bullet, avoid a bullet...maybe some explosives.
But if you get your opponent, being invisible.
Or can nullify your powers...or make you attack friends, or, or, or...etc.

    How do you survive?
Good question...what do you have in your pocket?
    Can you MacGyver it?

Quite an old thread, but I thought this might be the best place to add this.
Wil Wheaton has started a set of webisodes called "TableTop" where he plays board games with friends.

If you are thinking about buying games, this is a good place to see how they work:
    Geek & Sundry - TableTop

Each episode is 1/2 an hour long. Quite amusing and informative :)

I have been watching TableTop and it's a great way to get a feel for games. Geek and Sundry is quickly turning into a great set of shows on YouTube.

I am a big fan of Settlers of Cattan and manage to get together with friends to play (and drink beer) on a semi-regular basis. We are fans of board games in general and TableTop has introduced some new ones that I want to try.

And... I used to play D&D a lot. I just don't have the time to play anymore. That said, I am very proud to say that my son plays.

I played DnD a ton when I was in high school many moons ago. Still remember the day my mom found out and thought I was worshiping the devil.

I still can't believe that anyone would think their kids are worshiping the devil because they play D&D. When my wife found out that my son was playing, her concern was that he was going to be a geek.

I just told her to look at me. I played D&D and I turned out all right.

She just looked at me and said, "I rest my case".

I have just bought my children (and me!) Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride. I've played Ticket to Ride before but Catan is purely from friends recommendations. I'm trying to encourage my children away from the playstation and into board games. We already have (and play quite a bit) Carcassonne, which both boys like. I like that these kind of games exercise the mind and not just their thumbs :)

We just discovered Settlers of Catan too. Was invited over to a friends house for a games night earlier this year and they played that. Fell in love with it instantly! Immediately bought the game and the expansion pack (5-6 player one). I even downloaded it for my tablet.

Got past the Shadow Hulk...scared the bejesus out of us.

But we were able to somehow blind it...so it couldn't use it's "take over" power.
And then we cornered it into an area... (leveraging the limits it has on digging solid stone, not natural earth rock...and other battle rules)
He made the mistake of making it the single target without flanking help.

Hey, a tribe can take down a war elephant.

I always think it's amazing that the same wise principles can be used again and again...with some innovation.

But then again, the improv aspect is always the fun part about it all.

I've played Settlers of Catan for a while and recently got the Cities & Knights expansion. I had gotten a bit burned out and this expansion fixed that. I also enjoy the Axis & Allies games, specifically the anniversary and 1940 editions, although it can be a bit harder to find players for those.

We are addicted to boardgames and have a huge collection. We just played the 'Discovery of Oil' expansion for Catan yesterday and it really adds to the basic game. Oil can be amassed just the same as regular cards, and 1 oil card can be traded to the bank for 2 regular cards. Everytime you use 5 oil cards, it triggers an environmental disaster which can range from coastal flooding washing everyone's settlements away, to permanently removing hex numbers!
