The all about Bicycling thread

  1. It has been her favorite since birth. Always the left one. I don't know how she'll ride a bike with a thumb in her mouth though.

Surely this warrants mention here as well:

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

Now that's hot! Are you building it up yourself? What are you putting on it?
I've gone over to the dark side: Last month I got a Surly Pugsley fat bike which I have been riding in the dirt and snow. Having a blast.

    Nice on the fat bike!

My friend James, bike cafe owner, is doing the build. We met today to go over specifics, and it was very exciting.

    Nice!

My son has been talking about building a bike from scratch. I'll post any pics if he does.

I want to see what happens with this one though!

Not my wheels, headset, or seatpost—James slapped this together to tweak some geometry stuff. My build will be selectively more blacked out than this, but it was pretty exhilarating to see it start to come together even in this hypothetical setting.

I don't know enough about bikes to really understand that but it sure looks fancy.

But at least spill the beans on the biggest decision: Campy, Shimano, SRAM?

Shimano 9 speed, 46-26 double in front—it will work best with the low-end gearing and shifting setup we're looking to use.

So are we looking at a gravel/dirt-road rider there?
I see the brake posts.....cantis or center pulls?
Can't see if there are fender/rack mounts.
    Come on tell us!

Yes to it being a gravel/dirt road bike. Yes to it having (and me taking advantage of) front fork and rear stay rack mounts.

The rest of the specs, as I remember them:

Waterford steel fork with rack and fender mounts
Nitto front rack (a rear rack may come later but I use a Carradice camper long flap for my bike packing trips, so no need for the rear as of yet)
    Chris King headset (black)
    Zipp handlebars and stem (black)
    Brooks leather bar tape (black)
Shimano bar con shifters, possibly to be brake-lever mounted (kinda like this: retroshift | The Lazy Rando Blog...)
    Zipp seatpost (black)
    Brooks B17 saddle (black)
    Paul cantilever touring brakes
White Industries cranks (silver, though I'm contemplating getting these in black as well)
    White industries 46/26 chainrings (black)
    9 speed cassette, 12/40
    SKF bottom bracket
    Shimano 105 front derailleur
Shimano XT rear derailleur (an MTB derailleur to accommodate the lower gear range)
    Shimano double-sided touring pedals
    White Industries hubs
    Velocity rims
    SKS fenders (black)
    Panaracer T-serv Protex tires

...Delightfully plush, if you ask me. Mind you, this will only be the second bike in my stable, and I'm keeping my Surly—purchased almost eight years ago—for all my getting around town needs for the foreseeable future!

I would so like to build a new road bike, but I need to get my ass in the road saddle a lot more before I can do that (or so I promised myself).

That sounds like a very cool build.

Of course, your leg guns would leave me in the dust.

Not nearly as much as I have.

I need to get my ass in my saddle this week.

Let's do it! Never mind the fact that winter finally decided to show up this week in central MD...

Reposting from "Post a pic of your latest purchase" thread as it's more about bicycling.

  20. Hey Bicycling nerds.....

I need a favor. Can you help me find a Valentine's gift that is

    a) found on amazon prime
    b) under $20 as I don't see spending more than $20 on a hallmark holiday gift.
    c) something you would like but wouldn't buy yourself
    d) a highly rated, awesome thing that would make cycling way cooler.

    About DaddySquirrel:
He's done the Seattle to Portland ride twice. He's a two day rider and a one day rider. He's done all kinds of long rides
He likes riding with the family.
He's been unable to ride to work because of reasons.
He owns several bikes. One even folds up. He has several gadgets and tools. Don't ask me anything about them.....
