To be fair, it seems as if D&D was a bit of a niche at first. Growing up, we had Scrabble, Clue & Monopoly (but I never grasped how to play Monopoly so I never got into that one) and when I discovered D&D, it was only for social outcasts such as myself.

My wife and I started playing D&D (1st edition) only a couple months after we got married (1979.) We became part of a rapidly growing group of TTRPG'ers. In no time at all, in addition to playing D&D and AD&D, we were also playing Adventure!, Paranoia, Daredevils, Twilight 2000, Traveller, Gangbusters, FTL: 2448, Thieves' World, Gamma World, RuneQuest, Empire of the Petal Throne, Twilight 2000, 2300 AD (originally called Traveller: 2300), Albedo, and Cyberpunk 2013 (later, to become CP2020)... and all of this was just in the first TEN years! During that time, we not only played all of those, I actually had my own D&D, Traveller, and CP2020 campaigns going as well!

    I was a busy bunny!

As time passed, one after the other, they all went by the wayside. Today, I'm still running a D&D 3.5 campaign, but that's it.

    That's an impressive list!

I started with regular basic D&D in the early 1980's, tried Star Frontiers in the mid-1980's and also graduated to Advanced D&D, also tried Top Secret, Chill, Star Wars, (there was another sci-fi role-playing game but I cannot recall the name of it- I remember one of the races someone could play resembled a polar bear.) In the 90's I went with D&D 2e and a starship combat game that I also don't remember the exact name, but it involved Star Trek ships and had no role-playing; it was strictly a combat game.

Some friends of mine were heavily into Twilight 2000, but I couldn't quite get into that one. They just loved doing battle maneuvers, and I wanted more than just that.

    You can start anytime.
Even join an online game, if no one around you is interested. (or there are gaming stores with play areas.)
or you can get a group or yourself and rent a GM.
