Ok...I think we all agree that the groups so far have lost all logic.

    • There are other towns and smaller cities...you don't have to go to Atlanta, one of the most populated areas of the region.
(Imagine what it was like in like India...dense massive population... 1.3 billion  or Calcutta alone or Shanghai...)
    • There are other prisons and such...make yourself a fort.
    • Put yourself on a hill/cliff near a decent flowing river...safer on one side, use it for a water source and power. (they can't just climb easy)
(It is very easy to make a mill or generator...the principles are simple...there is more than enough wire everywhere...just twist the shit together.)
      Irrigation still works.
    • Start trusting others that show up healthy and capable. No person is an island. Use the quick and nimble as scouts for herds (and opponents)
(Figure out a signal system that minimizes noise and light)
If they SHOW are untrustworthy, kill them or ban them...quick. No torture, no disfigurement, no games...just do it.
** And I mean a danger to the group...not just ambiguous decisions, like Carol made.
It's a rough world now, bad choices will be made...including by the leaders.
    • Build and fortify your fences and other blocks...don't just leave them thin fences. Brick making still works. Make sure to leave holes.
Use long-ass spears to fork them...don't get close. Clear them out and spread them out...the smell will mask your smell from herds.
      Layer your defenses...always have a backup...and a retreat.
    • Start making a wood collection/harvesting program...you'll need this for a variety of heating needs (including cleaning water)
    • Find a friggin' camping/sporting goods store...they're everywhere now. Great place for supplies...even if just carbon packs for cleaning water.
But also gear, shelter, boats, etc.
    • Find a damn phone-book somewhere. (yes they still exist) and also a physical map (yes they still exist) use this to plan out harvesting missions.
(the yellow pages are just that...a map to a gold mine)
Also find a library...they will likely have instruction books.
    • Do NOT send out your valued people on harvesting or scouting missions. Again, they are VALUABLE.
(think of them as elderly or children who have to be secured...do NOT care if they are bored or feeling "useless")

Pretend you're back in medieval or even colonial times...they figured it out back then.
You're now in a real life historical re-creation. Think of the walkers as barbarians. (cannibal barbarians...)
    Secure, survive, build, defend, expand...repeat.

Don't walk away from a secured area...even if attacked. It's STILL more useful than nothing. Clear it out again, rebuild.
Start thinking of other places that will be even more secured. Move there if it's better. Keep the other for more people if found.

IF an illness comes through, isolate these people. Period. Escort your medics, at all times. (again, they are valuable)
Make sure there is a 24/7 monitor at all times, just checking on people for walker converts. (people can die at ANY time...even healthy ones & kids)
Get used to sleeping in a locked secured room...by yourself or just an SO. (Why didn't they close the prison cells?? locks go both ways...)

BTW...encourage quiet games and fun...you don't have to be miserable.
Hell, if you get even a minor generator going...you can charge a TV/VCR...and find one of the few tape stores left. (periodic group fun, not always)

Now...this is just me throwing out these ideas. I'm sure many more can be put out there and implemented.

EDIT: But the show would be boring. More boring than some people say it is now. It's based on The Walking Dead comic book series. Dude that writes and wields a heavy hand with AMC is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Most people in TV shows do stupid things to give us the audience, plenty of fodder for discussion. See, you just wrote an entire book. :p
EDIT # 2 The only modern comic book series that I've read so far is The Walking Dead. Before that I read, IDK, a couple thousand DC and Marvel comics (and during the summers in Canada, the extremely unappealing Archie & Veronica and Casper and such). I've looked at and appreciated the graphic illustrations of current-day comic books but can't comment on their written quality.

Uhh...when do I "not" write an entire book?? ;)

But I do think there would be more than enough to write about.
Most people I know are bored because it is so illogical...but they still like seeing the zombies.

But if they got a "bit" logical and civilized...it could be about re-establishing a population and organization
while still dealing with the variety of random zombies and huge herds.
Plus the fact your own can still die normally for a multitude of reasons as IRL...but they'll "convert" to zombie.
What about love? How do you have families again??

Plus you'll have to deal with other potential opposition...it just went back to "feudal" days.
Nation-States are gone...now it's lords and towns again.
Does a new religion pop up?

It doesn't always have to be about everyone's self-loathing...and randomly putting themselves into stupid situations. (aka Carl Syndrome)

    Anyways...enough said.
@noodle if you want to open a new thread, go for it...I'll participate.

I did not know that was the premise of that show, @ralphie. I never watched it.

Love the walking dead tho. I really appreciate how they are not afraid to kill off main characters.

Thinkin' maybe you didn't love tonight's eppy, then?
I like how with the exception of Rick and Carl, when it looks real bad, it probably is.
It is an impossible world. A moment of happiness, however small means you are probably about to experience devastation of a severe magnitude. I have zero hope for Beth and his being a fan favorite won't keep Daryl alive indefinitely, either. (No spoilers since they are both TV creations, not from the comics.) Tonight's episode put my stomach in knots. Then I watched the finale of True Detective, which was creepy as hell. Bad dreams for me tonight.

It was better at least it seemed more intreaging to me. I guess its cause there all split up. And not knowing whats happening, but I know its designed that way. Tonight's was better than the other weeks when it was Carl and rick. This seasons episodes are getting better week by week.

The Walking Dead Sneak Peek Clip Episode 14 “The Grove”

From next week's episode. Looks like Lizzie may snuff little sister Mika after Mika gets bitten.

Anyone else notice that the dude that Daryl met up with here:

...is the leader of the same gang that terrified Rick earlier in the season at the house (post-prison)?

    I completely overlooked it.

Also, Mags was resourceful in the last epsiode, using a no parking sign to decapitate walkers:

Ok. I can't believe no one has discussed this last episode. This one got me hooked, definitely one of my favorites. Glad to see some people making decisions.

Yep, I truly like this one. Agreed with her decision too.
There are no psych wards anymore, no head docs either.
You're not safe with her. Or she'll set you up to be vulnerable.
You don't want to leave her to be unsafe...or killing others...or creating hordes of new zombie "friends"

It's cruel new world, sometimes you have to make ruthless decisions.

The funny thing is, all the drama that these folks are going through making these choices...wouldn't be a problem for me.
I really do care for people, but I also know when to do what needs to be done.
Maybe this is because I'm a bit more used to it, having worked in a L&D hospital...and having to submit and refrigerate fetal demises at times.
Death happens to kids, babies and loved ones too.

And I'd rather you be gone, than haunting the world as a walking/eating corpse.

Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino), Mika (Kyla Kenedy), Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman) in Episode 14

(Short excerpt from my weekly post on TWD.)
Last episode was very emotional for the characters, though I cannot say it was in any way “shocking.” I was quite sure Mika would die and that later Lizzie would be put down, despite the group having found an idyllic and bountiful safe haven. The fact that ‘later’ came sooner is no biggie. It worked in a nice, poetic way that Tyreese would have to be part of the decision to put a human down “for the greater good,” as it gave Carol the perfect opening to come clean about killing Tyreese’s girlfriend back at the prison before it was discovered that she might have been cured of a potentially lethal flu. Tyreese immediately forgave Carol, so that bit of story-line won’t be dangling as we go forward. Also not dangling if anyone still really remembered to care, was the “mystery” of bunny-killer Lizzie. Yes, she enjoyed mutilating small animals for fun–whatever is on-hand–and she did so at the prison, helping compromise everyone’s safety by catching rats and hanging them on the fence to attract walkers. In the apocalypse, there is no room for serious mental illness: either a human or a walker is going to take you down. Simply a sad, hard fact of life.

Adding for TFP: The episode was well-crafted and acted. It is not going to please the zombie-lovers though because there was "too much" character development. One of the comments I saw (more than once) was "they didn't even get closer to (the so-called-safe haven) Terminus." At least we knew these people somewhat to have some sort of reaction to their dilemma. They were not random red-shirts getting chomped on. In fact, I believe that was part of the irony: both girls were killed by humans.

Screw the zombie lovers, I like them too...but it's not everything.
That's what was cool about this episode, exploring the moral affects of the new world, a "what if" situation.
They hit it from all angles.
Even allowing for not going out of their way to smash an easy zombie at the end.
Basically saying, there's a time for destruction, there's a time to not destroy.
    What's productive?
    What's real?
    It's very Machiavellian/realpolitik

And as far as character development, two things. Carol actually did something. She made a decision. Most of them are blithering idiots. They don't do anything until stuff happens to them. Carol makes decisions, right or wrong, but she does something. Euthanize and burn the first diseased. Teach the children v to defend themselves. Get rid of the danger to her and Tyreese. And Tyreese has bugged me from the beginning. He annoyed the crap out of me. Always moping about, until about to be killed, then finally lashing out. But when Carol told him, he looked like he was finally awake. Good job on the actor. But hopefully the character can move forward and start living. Like all the suggestions @rogue49 made, I hope that the group gets some leadership and starts trying to live.

I think it hard to cast a really good kid actor in a supporting role. The fact that they are not a lead (elsewhere) means they probably aren't stellar actors. You'll be seeing the older one (Brighton Sharbino) again, though. She's been working a while and a lot including the recent HBO mega-hit, "True Detective".

Lots of ppl didn't like Chandler Riggs as Carl, either. He was cast because back then, he was a dead-ringer for his comic book counterpart. Now he looks less like comic book Carl but at least has had some time to gain some acting ability, if only through osmosis.
