On the other side of the coin, some left thinking folks here are trying to start a boycott of Hobby Lobby.

I agreed to never buy anything from Hobby Lobby on Sunday.

Just being facetious. I don't do secondary boycotts at all.

Protest against ban on sledding on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol - Sled Free or Die!

The slope of Capitol Hill isn't all that steep, the snow wasn't all that deep, and throngs of reporters stood gawkingly in the way. But on this snow day, nothing was going to stop a few dozen children and their parents from asserting their right to sled.

"I think we can declare victory," Lyndsey Medsker, the organizer of Thursday's "Sled Free or Die" sled-in protest, said an hour into the event. Since 2001, the Capitol Hill police has banned sledding on the grounds. Seeing the forecast this week, Medsker posted a petition on Change.org to overturn the policy. D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton also took up the cause, requesting police lift the ban, but to no avail. Disappointed, Medsker thought a dose of snowy civil disobedience might work instead.

At least twenty sledders showed up to the sled-in Thursday afternoon, some with protest messages like "let us sled" emblazoned on their little luges. "There are really serious problems out there in the world," Medsker says. "I thought this was one little thing I might be able to change."

"Can we go home now?" her son, Finley, said during our interview. Apparently, sticking it to the man is tiresome work.

Capitol police were on scene and informed sledders of the ban, but made no efforts to stop the activities. Medsker suggest that it was the media attention that scared them off. Aside from print reporters, film crews from CNN, CBS, and even the UK's Sky News were there to capture the action. An hour and a half after the protest began, Holmes Norton declared victory on Twitter (she was not in attendance):

Kimberley gas plant protesters ‘left nothing’ for people

THE Aboriginal leader who backed a $40 billion gas plant in the Kimberley as a way of creating indigenous jobs has attacked “extreme nutter” environmentalists who he says derailed the plan but have since done nothing to help the region’s impoverished people.

Wayne Bergmann, a businessman and former head of the Kimberley Land Council, told an oil and gas conference in Perth yesterday that suicide rates and unemployment were rising in the Kimberley due to a paucity of jobs, especially for younger people.

Telstra director Geoff Cousins and singers Missy Higgins and John Butler were among those who opposed the use of James Price Point, 60km north of Broome as the site for the Woodside Petroleum project.

Woodside abandoned its plan in 2012 and walked away from a deal with the KLC to pay $1.5bn in benefits to Kimberley indigenous groups over 30 years in exchange for use of the land at James Price Point.

The company is instead planning to build the plant to process its Browse Basin gas reserves off the Kimberley coast using floating LNG technology.

This means that only a fraction of the employment, health and education benefits promised to Aborigines will be delivered.

Mr Bergmann, who lives in Broome, yesterday said the environmentalists had left the Kimberley and their legacy was “destroying any opportunities” for Aboriginal people.

“They’re all gone but the region is still in devastation,” he said.

“We’ve still got the highest suicide rates, the lowest employment (rates).

“Geoffrey Cousins is still living in his house in Sydney — he hasn’t left anything back in our region.

“So I’m driven to create jobs because if our mob don’t have meaning in their life, these statistics are going to continue.”

Mixed feelings on that one.
In Alaska the Native groups allowed the pipeline to go through their lands, got a great deal of money out of it, set up Native corporations and did very well for themselves.
They still have one of the highest suicide rates and accidental death rates per capita.

In Canada the Native groups have been fighting the pipelines.
They have been building cabins in the way of them, tearing up the stakes, refusing them on their lands, and generally being a pain in the ass.
They still have problems but they have their pride.
Which is the better choice.

A grandmother's trove of Civil War photos goes to Library of Congress

Abraham Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Ill., draped in black-and-white mourning cloth, following his assassination. African American mothers holding their babies, likely the first generation born into freedom. A battlefield in the Virginia wilderness a year after the war, with trees stripped of bark by musket fire.

Snapshots from the era of the Civil War, they are among hundreds of rare images gathered over four decades by an 87-year-old Texas grandmother. Now, partly through a family tragedy, they are the property of the Library of Congress.

The library announced Friday that it has acquired more than 500 stunning images from the collection of Robin Stanford of Houston. They depict a United States marked by the scourges of war, slavery and assassination.

And in some cases they show life before the war. One shot shows South Carolina slaves worshiping in a spartan, plantation church, in what may be the only prewar photograph of its kind.

Almost all the images are so-called stereo pictures -- two shots of the same scene printed on an oblong card that was designed to be seen in 3-D through a stereo viewer.

The library, which received the images in December, has many of them digitized and posted online. Eventually, all of them will be.

10 years of YouTube! Can you believe it? I’m not going to bore you with the blah, blah, blah about how YouTube changed the planet because it’s obvious that YouTube changed the planet. Just take 19 seconds, and watch Jawed talk about elephants at the zoo for no good reason at all.

Now Jawed is worth something like $140 million, and we all use YouTube every day. So here I am, paying my respects. What hath God wrought.

My daughter and I were in the car when a song, I think it was "Sunday Bloody Sunday," came on the radio.

I said: "This band is so popular that they named the world's biggest video sharing web site for them."

That was a few years ago. I think she has forgiven me since then.
