I have no shame, I'll quote my own post .

For those few who might be interested , some hints and background:

Neil Diamond recorded the song, but it was actually a huge hit for another band (IIRC their single was released before Diamond's album version). The fact that this band had any hits at all surprised many people in the music business, and increased the already existing animosity towards the band [this is a major hint]. That band's recording lead to other bands/artists recording the song, and their version has resurfaced several times over the decades. Which means Diamond made, and is still adding to, a very large fortune from just one song. The money he made from his other music (please consider how many hits he has had, and how long he has been around) doesn't match this one-song fortune.
