Cold, more snow, more cold, more snow, just won't stop. Winter, fuck it. Shout out to all the Texas TFPers, be safe this week. Lots of snow and ice for you.
I feel for you southern folk. Single digit temperatures are painful no matter what, but at least we are used to dealing with them up here. We have the infrastructure for it and it's just part of our winter routine. Stay safe down there.
I agree, stay safe Southern TFPers. Ice sucks balls, unless it's in a glass filled with alcohol. Be careful, stay warm and let's find out who has the weather machine turned on high.
News up in your parts (400 mile away, a pond jump in AK) is that little village that had its fresh water repository burn down. That’s a heck of a thing to have happen out in the middle of nowhere in Winter. I know people and govt are assisting now. But it still takes time to rebuild. Nature can be ruthless. People can be stupid and uncaring.
Tulusak has had no end of bad luck. "In the short term, the community wants to connect its well to the school. The school is set up for running water, and residents can use it for laundry and hauling water to their homes. But the well pulls up water from the Tuluksak River, which isn’t safe to drink. So that solution raised more questions than answers. Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium’s John Nichols, who was in Wednesday’s meeting, relayed some of the questions that came up: “Do we provide individual treatment within each home so folks can treat just the water they’re going to drink, or do we provide a small treatment system at the school itself? And we don’t have an answer to that yet.” Nearly one third of the entire village is has tested positive for COVID-19. On top of the water crisis and the high COVID-19 case count, Tuluksak is still trying to recover the body of a snowmachiner who went through the ice earlier this month. And you thought your 2020 was fucked up.
Overnight lows around 17F. Won't get above freezing until 3PM tomorrow. At about 2:30 this morning I woke up to no electricity; it's still out, going on 18 hours now. We have two small built into the wall gas heaters that only heat a small area, but that's better than nothing, and I don't trust turning them up too high. Flashlights and candles come in handy. Unfortunately our brightest nearly brand new one decided to demonstrate why a two hour battery life is very optimistic. We've only gone into the fridge once today. On that note...of course our elec went out, we did a huge grocery run yesterday morning. Late last night I turned our water off at the house and drained the pipes. Of course now the valve is frozen, and I'm not about to use force. I'll try again tomorrow as things "warm up." Cell service was very glitchy most of the day, I'm surprised I'm getting on the net. We did charge our power blocks/back-up battery packs yesterday.
Be careful...keep safe, be well. Hope it goes well. Mother Nature is raging. There's a reason I didn't travel for vacation. Hell, the place I was planning on going to had a tornado. (southern FL...thunder storms all week) Here at home, we're supposed to get hit again on Thurs. This weekend was all ice storms until today. To quote the Church Lady, "Isn't that special?"
OMFG! It's finally stopped snowing and the sun is out! Shit is melting! WOOT! WOOT! A season's worth of snow in 2 1/2 weeks. More snow on the way, but at least some of it is melting now. Oh, and @ralphie250, I was wrong. No ice for you, just tornadoes.
Still no electricity. We have food, water for drinking and flushing, warm clothing, and the small heater in the half bath is keeping the bedroom reasonably "warm." My wife is freaking out about the cell phones and the battery backups. She took a handful of chargers and power blocks to neighbor she sort of knows. They wouldn't let her in the house, but did agree to charge the blocks. If you're puzzled, so am I.
Oh, that fucking sucks. Dislike, mucho. Hope things turn around for you and the rest of the southern states.
didnt get that, which is good. just some patchy places on the road from the rain the day before. I hope everyone is staying safe and warm
