That would be true as well. I typically saw sunlight every 2-3 days when underway (when the mess lines were long enough to reach up there), not too many non-engineering officers usually, and got to climb around shaft alleys, pump rooms, and main spaces.
" group dynamics that I had no real interest in joining" largely applied there as well. Most people that tried to catch my attention with the ever popular "shipmate" term were off to a bad start.

Thanks, it's real good to be back. I tell ya, it was brutal to be working all day and unable to access TFP (blame the porn). I was stuck reading crusty "James Patterson with ___" paperbacks. You've Been Warned is the single worst novel I've ever read in my short life... and I'm reading 50 Shades.

Once again, insurance sales < waste management. Everybody poops, man. They've even got a book about it, I hear.

I read the old Alex Cross novels. Back when he was awesome. Fucking Tyler Perry?! Nooooo. The whole series tanked out a few years ago.

Yeah, you know who reads those things? Desperately bored motherfuckers with dead laptops (my ancient Toshiba conveniently died two weeks before I came home, dead fan). Or maybe people that are okay with the literary equiv of unseasoned Chex Mix. So, yeah, it's not exactly a revelation that Team Patterson stamps out dime novels with a hundred 3-page cliffhanger chapters and sells a zillion copies. As far as household names, I much prefer the Stephen King and his pseudonym to any other NYT gladiator. His voice is very comfortable in my head. I went from reading Bag of Bones--arguably King's most emotional work--to these shit novels with nebulous titles that read all too much like William Shatner acts as depicted on that cartoon Family Guy. Before You've Been Warned was visually choked down, I also forced myself to read Violets Are Blue, a novel that has absolutely nothing to do with flowers or the color blue, just vampires with... uh... attack tigers.

...I read a dozen shit novels. I was putting back a novel a day.

It was a little overwhelming.

 

I quit James Patterson's and Patricia Cornwell's books a few years back when I realized (a) their characters were the same boring-as-fuck people book after book, (b) I found Lee Child's books, and (3) Justin Bieber started personally singing to me about Miley Cyrus' secret love for Froot Loops and Taco Bell sauce packets.
