I run Win7 on a P4 2.4Ghz (32bit) 1 Gb ram for testing and I'm giving up on it as it feels too slow. One thing that I think has a huge impact on the experience is that I don't have a monitor nor keyboard connected to it, instead everything is done remotely, mostly via remote desktop. It's obvious that remote desktop takes up resources and can configured for different scenarios. I have tried different settings and think I have the optimal settings or close to it. I also run Windows Home Server on similar hardware and it's dead slow if I log into it.
