I have a number of PCs all over the place and every time I get a new one I install something first on it...

It used to be Firefox, now it's Chrome.

After that, Filezilla and MS Office and I'm pretty much done.

Used to be Firefox, but now it would be Chrome. Then:

    avast! Antivirus
    ZoneAlarm
    Spybot-Search&Destroy
    CCleaner

That's for PC. If it were OSX, it would be:

    Chrome
    Microsoft Office
    Adobe Creative Suite
    Cyberduck

    Quite the difference, no?

Chrome and Thunderbird are first on the list. avast is my free AV software of choice for Windows machines, then it's Pidgin for Linux or Windows or Adium for Mac.

It gets a bit confusing being an active user of Windows, Mac and Linux.

OS, drivers, Avast, Office, Firefox, then update everything.

I always struggle a bit with drivers.

    For OS X:
    Chrome
    the Apple iLife package
LibreOffice ('cause I'm cheap, and don't have much in the way of needs in an office package)
CrashPlan (to keep everything backed up remotely)
CarbonCopyCloner (to occasionally back up locally)
things to play with audio and video (VLC, Handbrake, MPEGStreamclip, Audacity, MPlayerX, Vox, scripts from Doug's Applescripts for iTunes, Audio Hijack Pro, iTiVo, pyTiVoX)

Roughly in this order - may vary some after the the firewall/antivirus
    Drivers
    Firewall/Antivirus
Opera and Firefox (the Microsoft browser is high on my "dislike with a strong passion" list)
    Openoffice.org
    Utilities - 7-Zip/Irfanview/etc
    Foobar20000
    GIMP
Soundforge 6.0d - yes it is an old Sonic Foundry build but I paid good money for it and have no compelling reason to upgrade.
and so on and so on..........................

I was using Filezilla for years but have switched to FireFTP in firefox. That and Netflix streaming are the main reasons I open Firefox. Opera works with streaming if you change the browser identification to anything else, but I still give that job to Firefox.

Updates, MS security essn (avast left a bad taste in my mouth after trying remote uninstall), then chrome. After that it's whatever software I feel like loading. Usually a small video game to play while I install everything else.

so Avast is good? I installed it on my old XP Toshiba Satallite (Celeron) and it seems to have ground my processing to a halt. So much so that the first thing I do after a 15 minute boot period (ostensibly so Avast can obtain updates) is to turn off the live monitoring.

It's that or wait for minutes while navigating around the web. I installed Avast over AVG thinking it would be better.

I used to have AVG, but it was doing something annoying and I removed it, replacing it with Avast. Haven't noticed anything wrong with it.
