there is a publick house in tiny town in which the demographic changes every night at about 8. the median age declines sharp-like and with that i am transformed, should i be there, from bearded gentleman enjoying a fine beverage into creepy old guy.

last time i was there, i realized that i've been sick of pink floyd's dark side of the moon for far longer than any of those people had been alive.

that pretty much cinched the deal for me.

  2. When you give up wearing contact lenses because you got tired of fumbling with reading glasses. It's bifocals from here on out.

When you realise that your kids are older than the cops you see driving around, people speak to you, you can't hear them but you don't give a shit!

I'm halfway there. I keep slipping in just under the wire of needing bifocals when I go for the annual eye check. I've been legally blind, wearing contact lenses since age 10 and when I stop being so vain I'll give them up. Don't know if you go that far back--to hard, plastic contact lenses?

Always wear my contacts out & about but work from home so have a couple pairs of cute, legally blind-type eyeglasses. (They're about 1/3 the thickness than back in my younger years.) Very, very fortunate that insurance pays for half since when I request a 'moderate priced' frame I get handed a $1000 bill for the final tab.

Never have tried contacts. The last pair of glasses I purchased nearly two years was something like $400 dollars. When you add the relatively inexpensive frames to the nasty high prescription the bill gets a bit much.

The only place nearby that takes my eyeglasses/contact insurance is on the higher end--which I'd never go to sans insurance. I'm guessing it all comes out about in the middle for me price-wise after the co-pay.

I once told my daughter when I was a kid there were only 3 TV ch. all in B&W only to have her ask if the videos we rented were also B&W. I recently had that same conversation
with my grand daughter only she asked what B&W was and if by videos I meant something like DVD's.

I hadn't thought about it until I read CaptainBob 's post about his father dying in '76, but I'm now older than my father when he died, as well.
He died at 35 in '80, and I'm 40 and feeling old.

The other day I had a splinter in my thumb. I moved my thumb closer to my face to better see, when I realized everything got blurry all of a sudden.
I used to be able to look at something from almost as close as 4 inches away. Now it's about 6 or 7.
My hearing and memory are failing, too.

What is the saying? Growing old is not for the faint of heart.
I also hear (and hear myself saying)
    'It's better than the alternative.'

Growing older is about a lot of things include decrepitude but there is wisdom too, with any luck.

There should be a TFP 'old geezers' meet up someday before we croak :D (young whipper-snapper TFPers welcome). Hee. Love it.

Only 3? We had 2, 6, 8, and 12. Well, sometimes channel 12, if we turned the metal coat hanger just right...

    Such a show-off, itwasme!
All we had in CT was ABC, CBS and NBC plus 2 UHF public telly stations, one out of NY one out of Hartford, I think.

I loved spending holidays at my Canadian cousin's homes because they had a few spare stations, though in French.

We never got 2 (ABC) down in Salem when I was younger. Sometime around 3rd grade my parents bought a COLOR! TV and it came with a motorized roof antenna. After that we had all 4 PDX stations. But at that age all that mattered was we got Rambling' Rod in the morning.

    Salem....which one?
We were late getting colour TV because my dad was :ahem: frugal about such things. I was 14 y.o. and it changed everything.
I didn't have any morning fave kid shows in the States.
'Twas ever-loyal to Mr. Dress-up, Canada's Mr. Rogers.
Otherwise, Captain Kangaroo was on the TV in the a.m. but I wasn't watching.

I'm kinda freaked at how close you are to Santa Rosa. There are three real cool ex-TFPers that live there. I've stayed with them twice for meetups. Beautiful area. (Come to think, one, GeeWhiz's son-in law JoeDog, might have been only at Promethesus Free, a offshoot forum of exile/defectors from the TFP of that time.) I've posted about this place on my Facebook wall and he's one of my 13 FB friends so, hopefully he'll wander over. I am so bloody off topic.

Enough of the morbidity - let's lighten up and
    ... oh bugger - ok, more more-bidity.

I know I'm getting old when my DNA gets a bit mixed up ... or at least creative with nose air, ear hair, eybrow hair and ... puhlease ... WTF is my genetic breakdown doing to my toe-nails? Just plain wrong.

    Carbonic Getting Tilted

My oldest niece is in high school this year. While I wasn't old enough to truly appreciate Nevermind the year it came out, I am old enough that it was still one of the first CDs I bought.

Actually, listening to almost any music from the 90s makes me feel old, mainly because I'm all too aware that it doesn't sound cool to the kids these days (like my niece) and that part of why I enjoy it is nostalgia.

I'm from Salem Oregon, actually spent most of my childhood in a small community just east of there... Fruitland, paid for that once I got to Jr High in Salem.

Yes I'm near Santa Rosa in Rohnert Park with daughter and her family for a week then I'm head back home to Mexico. Which is good cause I AM FREEZING! Maybe that's because I'm getting old?

I used to watch Rambln' Rod all the time in my younger years. I remember "It's time for another cartoon!" and the segment for birthdays every show. Channel 49 almost never came in down in Woodburn, or was damn fuzzy at best.
edit: and of course all of the buttons on his coat.
