Maybe the Canadian Motel 6's were more expensive? Or more likely, my memory is getting cobwebs.

When getting down is as almost as difficult as getting it up.

I remember taking a driving vacation as a kid. We started out in Salem, Oregon and headed to Eastern Oregon, then down toward Southern Oregon and finally back to Salem in a weeks time. I remember my dad was always looking for a Motel 6 because it was 6 bucks. Want to know the difference between a Motel 6 and a Super 8 in the early '70's other then the 2 bucks? A Super 8 always had a pool. After the second night my brother and I were happily dipping into our piggy banks to pay the extra dollar each. My dad, being the accountant he was, charged us something like $1.12 because the room tax difference.

I've stayed at a few Motel 6 properties and they always seemed to be a little on the shabby side, not very welcoming, and the clientele noisy and kind of "rough and ready." The last room I had cost $49 and smelled distinctly of dog urine.
I'll gladly pay extra to stay in a Hampton or Holiday Inn Express.otel 6 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've noticed that several bands that were considered "alternative," "edgy," or "weird" when I was in high school are getting airplay on our super-mellow, non-offensive restaurant radio station. :(

I was talking to one of our hostesses the other night about seeing E.T. in the theatre (the rerelease in '85, not the original run.) She's never seen E.T. I also remembered that I rode in the back of my uncle's pickup to go see the movie-- and at the time, it was perfectly legal.

This is drifting off the OP topic, my apologies. But...

My last drive through the US to retrieve some larger items I couldn't or didn't want to pay to ship down here to Mexico I stayed at a lot of Motel 6's. Motel 6's, all of them according to their web site, are pet friendly. There's usually a fee, about $10 I think. I had two large dogs and my plan was drive and sleep. I made it from the Yucatan to San Fransisco in 4 nights. My friends here didn't believe that was possible and thought I was joking when I called to let them know I was there and safe. So I sent them a e-mail with a photo of me and that days paper at my daughter house. Like I said I planned to drive and sleep. Staying at Motel 6's lowered the number of hours I was able to sleep. I often found myself sleeping about 3-5 hours and then back on the road. A couple days I ended up driving more then 20 hours or more. I spent two nights in Texas Motel 6's and one in Willcox, Arizona. In Texas they were not well kept and each parking lot was full of construction trucks. Outside several rooms were groups of guys drinking and partying and being loud. My experiences in Willcox could have been used as plot lines for Breaking Bad. The clerk was behind bullet proof glass. During check-in he asked me three times if I needed more towels. I asked "are there no towels in the rooms?" "Oh, yeah there should be." That was repeated three times. He also pointed out they had coffee and he could make me some. "It's 2am and all I want is a little bite to eat and sleep." "Oh, yeah we ain't got no food here not even the breakfast stuff anymore. It's okay 'cause I just bring a little something from home if I get hungry." I asked if there was anything open nearby where I could get something. "oh, yeah, sure yeah. Oh wait it's late. Ummm, oh, yeah, right, there's a 7-11 across the street they might have food there." If that guy wasn't on meth I'm a 21 yr. old billionaire rock star. I walked over to said mentioned 7-11. Parked next to it was a van that was rocking and moving. I could hear voices but not really what they were saying. Naturally I glanced in the front window as I walked by. It looked like the entire van was full of stuffed animals. That's all I could see was various stuffed animals. Walking back by the van after buying some snack/junk food I could see light coming from the front windshield. This time when I looked in I could see a young man trying to stack the stuffed animal back up and a meth lab behind him. and this time I could clearly hear him say "bitch! I told you the panda bear goes on top of the frog!" I took the long way around the building to my room and made sure the door was double locked. If you ever get the chance to go Willcox pass it by. I slept for about 3 hours and then drove straight through to SFO.

On my return trip I checked the internet for other pet friendly motels and map out a route and schedule that kept me out of Motel 6's. I also took seven days driving back.

You're on hold, humming to the music, and when a person finally answers you can't remember who you called or why.

I got pissed off when the news kept reporting that the man who played "Goober Pyle" died. It was Gomer Pyle, idjits... where so you think the "gomer" as an insult came from?

I remember watching the Muppet Show on prime time television, Pee Wee getting busted at the porn theater 25 minutes from my parents' house and when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came on on MTv... back when they played "music videos". My clients didn't know the muppets were EVER on tv, not just the web or DVD, asked who PeeWee Herman was and don't even watch MTv.

When a construction worker at my old workplace fell through the ceiling, I asked if he did it all "Judd Nelson-style" and they all just looked at me. "You know, from 'The Breakfast Club'?" Crickets. "Seriously?!?! The movie? You mess with the bull, you get the horns?"
Nothing. I was sad. These kids were in their 20s and didn't have a clue.

And, I realized I am getting old when we went to universal studios for halloween horror nights, to find that, not only was it stupid, but we both climbed into the whirlpool tub at 2 am when we got back... Not for fun, but because our damn feet hurt.

You realize there was in fact a "Goober Pyle," right? He ran the filling station in Mayberry RFD.

    Goober Pyle. Gomer's cousin.

Gomer was in some of the Andy Griffith Show episodes before Jim Nabors got his own show but I can't remember whether or not he was in the Mayberry RFD spinoff.

    Yeah.

Or when you are down the pub watching some open mic acts and you get nostalgic about the realisation that you are old enough to be the father of of the young musician you are encouraging - because the reality sinks in that you are actually old enough to be their grandfather! :(
